Robin Elander has been named interim Downtown Santa Barbara executive director, according to Bob Stout, board president of the business organization’s board of directors.
She starts the job May 11.
Elander is the executive of Santa Barbara’s half-century-old Summer Solstice Celebration and founder of Global Impact Good.
For the time being, Elander succeeds Carrie Kelly who fled abruptly earlier this year to take a job in Arizona.
Downtown Santa Barbara has more than 1,200 members and runs the city’s largest Business Improvement District. It is responsible for promoting downtown businesses, nonprofits and associate members. The organization also administered the city’s Plaza Maintenance contract.
Elander has a master’s in public policy and administration and a bachelor’s degree in park, recreation and tourism management.
She also has organized Open Streets in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria and worked at Impact Hub as events coordinator.
She began her career working on large-scale projects in diverse neighborhoods in Raleigh, N.C. from 1999 to 2002, then for the city of Ventura from 2002 to 2011.
She will continue with the Summer Solstice Celebration this year to put on a virtual community workshop and parade while serving as Downtown Santa Barbara interim executive director.
“It’s going to take us all working together to recover, innovate and grow in these unprecedented circumstances,” Elander said. “Let’s get the conversations started and make some downtown magic happen.”
