'Shop Like a Mother' Theme of Boutique

“Shop Like a Mother” was the slogan imprinted on a shopping bag that greeted more than 1,000 attendees at the Oct. 22 and 23 Mom Made Market at Impact Hub, 1117 State St.

The two-day boutique started Saturday morning and ended at 4 p.m. Sunday. It featured a variety of mom-made products ranging from toddler booties to small child clothes to soaps and jewelry. Some 72 mom businesses are represented at the IHub’s first event of its kind.

However, this is not the first Mom-Made Market event. Organizer Kimberley Cross said similar boutiques have been staged in Honolulu, Portland, Ore., Scottsdale, Carlsbad and nearby Orange County.

“Moms who work at home need a social outlet,” Cross said. She said Another Mom Made Market is planned next month at the Orange County Fairgrounds where 110 businesses plan to attend ahead of a 300-person waiting list.

Organizers charged a $5 fee to enter the weekend boutique. Proceeds are aimed at helping mothers with cancer. Some 400 women and men paid in advance to attend. Many women just walked by and decided to get a start on their Christmas shopping.

Cross said the success of the IHub event leads her to believe that it will return to Santa Barbara. She said it is hoped that one of the Mom Made Markets can be held somewhere at least once a month.

The Santa Barbara boutique featured many moms with their young children, who were given over to their dads as the mother was about to make a sale.
