After more than a year and a half or waiting, Trader Joe’s is moving from its much smaller location, 29 S. Milpas St., to the 22,000-square-foot, former Fresh Market location at 222 N. Milpas St. with a grand opening set for 8 a.m. July 28.
Early last year, Trader Joe’s Manager Victoria Tice said a new tenant had to be found before the store could move. She said Traders was still moving things out of the old location. So, not new tenant has moved in yet.
The U.K.-based Fresh Market closed in March 2015 after occupying the Milpas location for about 15 months, which was occupied by Scolari’s Market for several decades. Both parent companies of those markets closed all their stores in California.
Trader Joe’s will not only occupy a much larger building, but will have a parking lot about three times the size of its current 10,000-square-foot Milpas store. The old store shared a small lot with Rite Aid, Petco, Jack’s Bagels, Carl’s Jr. and Santa Barbara Tobacco Shop. The new location has a PetSmart store as its only neighbor at the moment.
Founded in South Pasadena and now based in Monrovia, Trader Joe’s also has South Coast locations on De la Vina Street in Santa Barbara and on Calle Real in Goleta.
