The theme for the 45th annual Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Celebration
at Alameda Park from June 21 to 23 is “Wonder.”
With more than 1,000 participants expected, the Solstice parade starts at noon June 22 at the corner of State and Cota streets.
Artists are being sought for the Solstice poster and T-shirt competition, which offers a $500 honorarium. Deadline for submission is 5 p.m. March 6. See https://solsticeparade.com/home/about-the-poster-art
The public’s opportunity to vote for the art work that will represent the 2019 parade will be 1st Thursday, March 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Distinctive Art and Framing, 1333 State St.
Solstice organizers are also accepting applications for a variety of positions, including: festival vendor coordinator, food vendor coordinator, volunteer coordinator, special projects assistants, workshop artist in residence, festival production team and other jobs.
As in year’s past, the celebration will feature an original display of floats, giant puppets, whimsical costumes and masks on scores of parade participants of all ethnic and economic backgrounds. Dancing, music, drumming and drama enthralls thousands of spectators each year.

The festival at Alameda Park attracts more than 80,000 people during the three-day weekend. Proceeds from the festival support the Community Arts Workshop where residents and visitor are welcome to learn to build floats and participate in bringing the parade to life.

Solstice is seeking live musical bands to perform on the main stage June 22, June 23 or June 24 during the festival at Alameda Park. This is for groups seeking exposure to new audiences in exchange for marketing and promotion. For information, email [email protected]
Celebration organizers Also want to bring aboard ambassadors to represent Summer Solstice at local events.
They are also seeking volunteers with skills in a number of areas to join for short projects. Skill areas include: videography, graphic design, community outreach, administration and organization, social media, customer service, answering phones, fundraising and fundraising events, IT and data entry, T-shirt sales, resource recruitment (in-kind donations for workshop and festival), technical such as woodworking, metal workshop, grant writing, and on-site festival and parade volunteers. A limited amount of front-row, shaded seats, that include water and a snack are available along the parade route for $50. These can also be purchased as a group of 50 for a company or organization. Proceeds go to support the costs of the workshop and parade infrastructure. They can be purchased on the Solstice website.
